2020 Newsmakers Postponed Due to COVID-19

The AWC Board of Directors has postponed the 47th Annual Newsmakers Awards Luncheon scheduled for April 29. "The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention issued a recommendation Sunday, March 15, that organizers of events of 50 people or more, postpone for eight weeks to help limit the spread of COVID-19, commonly referred to as Coronavirus," said President Jillian T. Schillaci in a message to members, honorees, attendees and sponsors. "Our event falls within that eight period and we are following the CDC's guidance and postponing Newsmakers."

AWC is committed to celebrating the achievements of Newsmakers 2020  honorees Aliye Shimi, Lisa Shotts and Kim Teehee, and Saidie Lifetime Achievement Award honoree Joy Harjo. "We look forward to sharing a new date when it is safe and appropriate to reschedule," said the announcement.

Proceeds from Newsmakers provide scholarships to young women pursuing degrees in communications, and books to each student at our adopted school, Anderson Elementary. AWC is extremely grateful to its leading sponsors who have committed to Newsmakers 2020: Cherokee Nation Businesses, Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, The Williams Companies, Public Service Company of Oklahoma and Freedom Electrical Services.
