The scholarship is named in memory of Ruth E. Richards, longtime AWC member, former AWC Tulsa president, Saidie Lifetime Achievement honoree and Chapter Super Star honoree. A life-long learner, Ruth was a talented development communications professional. Even more than that, she was a mentor who tirelessly helped countless peers improve their skills and our community. A minimum of two scholarships are awarded to women pursuing communications degrees at Oklahoma colleges or universities. The scholarships are awarded each spring at the annual Newsmaker Awards luncheon.

Smarty Pants is a part of the AWC Tulsa community outreach program with Anderson Elementary to help meet the basic needs of students and aid in student learning. This includes providing hats, underwear, gloves, scarves, even uniform pants and shirts. Often, when children do not have access to basic supplies, they struggle to learn. Throughout the year, AWC Tulsa accepts donations to the Smarty Pants fund. We work with the school to provide the items that are needed most each year. Funds from the sale of Newmaker luncheon flower arrangements are a big part of this fund.
